Penarth's Smallest 'Park'

  • Facebook

Arcot Triangle is a strange anomaly of Penarth, being a result of where three early sections of town roads were laid, leaving this shape between them. Its history can be traced back to the mid 1800s and the development of this part of the town along with Penarth Docks. It even has a wee historical secret...

Nowadays it has become a renovated patch of green space, often referred to as Penarth's Smallest Park.

(We will be covering more of the history of this area, and the Penarth Docks as part of our Penarth Town Heritage Trail).

What the Group Does

Volunteers from Penarth Gardening Club, started by Tricia Griffiths, and local residents get together regularly to work on the garden. It is an informal group so membership is not required; just join in when you can.

It also works with the Vale of Glamorgan Council Parks & Gardens Department in the care of this space.

Why their work is important

The Arcot triangle had become an overgrown, dark and uninviting space. The initial works carried out by Penarth Town Council and VOG to lift several tree crowns and to create extra planting borders made a big difference.

This garden is now a lovely space for local residents and passers-by to enjoy and is a welcome stopping place between the north and south of Penarth. It is often decorated for local children at Halloween and locals congregate to sing carols there at Christmas.

Notable Projects & Features

Section 106 monies funded a much needed circular seat around the central stones, which was built and installed by charity Vision 21* and artwork featuring brass plaques, bee hotel posts and bunting that were designed by a local artist David Mackie* to reflect the area’s history. A new wooden notice board has also been installed.

Formation of The Group

The group was started in 2018 when Penarth made its first entry into the Wales in Bloom* competition and the Arcot Triangle garden needed much improvement before being assessed as part of the judging process.

The Opening Ceremony for the redevelopment by the PTC took place on the 26th May 2018, with then Penarth Town Mayor & Town Councillor Jon Luxton performed the ribbon cutting ceremony.
